Language Arts letter written to Ms. Wagner
Dear Ms. Wagner,
Hi, I’m Katheryn Opperman, and I am 13 years old. I was born on August 9th, 1999 in Manchester, IA. I have lived in Strawberry Point all my life, and I started kindergarten at Starmont Elementary. My parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins have grown up here and have graduated from Starmont too, so we have a lot of family here!
I am the youngest of 3 children in our family. My oldest sister, Ellen is 17 years old and is in volleyball, basketball, track and field, golf, choir, and band. My older brother is also 17 and his name is Brendan. He does photography, track, cross country, and band. My parents’ names are Aaron and Jackie. We also have one dog names Otis, and he is seven years old!
Some things that I enjoy doing are going camping, jumping on our trampoline, singing, and playing sports. I like to play volleyball, basketball, track, and swim team in the summer. One thing I really love to do is dancing! I take dance classes with Michelle Philgreen with the Rec Center Dancers in Manchester, IA. I take ballet, tap, jazz, and pointe with the 9th-12th grade classes.
This summer, I went on a vacation to Europe! My sister Ellen was in the Iowa Ambassadors of Music European Choir Tour so my parents, Aunt JoAn, and I all went to England, France, and Austria to see her concerts. We also went to Ireland and the Czech Republic. In Ireland, we saw tiny cobblestone streets that the crazy drivers would drive on, In England, we saw Big Ben and the London Eye, in France, we saw the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triumph, and in Austria, we saw some famous castle! My favorite place was Ireland because of the nice people and beautiful scenery and Austria because also the nice people and the beautiful scenery! I’m excited to possibly talk to you about it, and I’m also excited to work with you this year!
Sincerely,
Katheryn Opperman

A poem that we wrote about ourselves!
Where I am From
By: Katheryn Opperman
I am from that old house by the church
I am from the home with too much furniture
and too many antiques
I am from the trampoline that my dad and I built
I am from the old oak tree in the front yard
that late night swings happened
I am from flowers galore and the old shed
in my backyard that holds bikes and my first garden
I am from the church parking lot that I learned
how to ride my first bike
I am from the best friend across the street
I am from the grocery store down the street
that late night ice cream purchases were made
I am from Connor, Grandma Rose Anne, and Grandpa Jerry
I am from Farm Day, green ghost, and the sand mountain
I am from Crackin’ the Bats
I am from “you’re nuttier than a fruitcake”
And “you’re full of corn” and “Krackeryn”
I am from Aunt Sheri’s Meatloaf, Daddy Chocolate
Ice Cream, cupcakes, and cream puff
In our dining room, our secretary holds old memories,
black and white photos, and drawings from a time
or two ago
This is where I am from
